Why Chimney Cap Installation Matters in Dallas
A chimney without a cap is an open hole in your roof. Rain runs straight down the flue, rusts the damper and soaks the smoke chamber. Birds, squirrels and raccoons climb in to nest. Leaves and twigs from live oaks pile up on the smoke shelf.
Dallas weather makes it worse. Spring hail dents and knocks caps loose. High wind bends mesh and pushes caps sideways. Our 100°F summers and humid air rust cheap caps in just a few seasons.

Rain Cap Installation
A rain cap is a metal hood that sits over the top of the flue, with mesh around the sides. It does three jobs at once:
- Keeps rain out of the flue, damper and firebox
- Keeps animals out of the chimney with a mesh screen
- Stops sparks from leaving the flue and landing on the roof
Building codes size spark arrestor mesh so it blocks a 1/2 inch ball but lets a 3/8 inch ball through. That keeps sparks and animals out without clogging with soot too fast. We fit each rain cap to the size and shape of your flue, then fasten it so wind and hail cannot lift it off.
There are two main ways a cap attaches. A flue-mounted cap clamps onto the clay tile or metal pipe that sticks up above the crown. A crown-mounted cap sits on the crown itself and covers the flue from above, which is the usual choice when the tile is short or cracked. The hood also needs enough height above the flue so smoke can get out without slowing the draft.
Chimney Cap Materials Compared
The metal you choose decides how long the cap lasts in Dallas heat, humidity and hail.
| Material | How it holds up | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Galvanized steel | Lowest cost, but usually rusts within a few years and stains the brick | Short-term fixes only |
| Stainless steel | Resists rust for many years, the most common choice | Most brick and metal chimneys |
| Copper | Very long life, turns a soft green-brown over time | Older homes where looks matter |
We do not recommend galvanized caps for most homes. A rusted cap has to be replaced, and the rust can stain the crown and brick below it.
Multi-Flue and Custom Caps
Many older Dallas homes in Lakewood, Preston Hollow and Highland Park have chimneys with two or three flues. One serves the fireplace, one may serve a furnace or water heater, and one may serve a second fireplace.
A single-flue cap will not cover them all. A multi-flue cap is a larger hood that sits on the crown and covers every flue at once. We measure the crown and build the cap to fit. A custom cap is also the right choice for oversized or odd-shaped flues.
Chase Covers on Factory-Built Chimneys
Newer homes in North Dallas, Plano, Richardson and Carrollton often have a factory-built metal chimney inside a wood-framed chase. The top of that chase is a flat metal pan called a chase cover.
Most builders used galvanized chase covers. Over time they rust, sag and hold water. Then water drips into the chase, rots the framing and runs down into the firebox. Signs include rust streaks on the siding below the chase and rust inside the fireplace.
We replace old chase covers with stainless steel covers that have a slope or cross-break so water runs off. The flue cap fits back on top, sealed to the new cover.
How We Install a Chimney Cap
- Measure. We measure the flue, the crown and the height of the tile or pipe above the crown.
- Check the chimney. We look at the crown, flashing and flue for damage the cap would hide.
- Clear the flue. If there is a nest or debris inside, we remove it first.
- Install. The cap is fastened to the flue or crown so wind and hail cannot lift it.
- Show you. You get before and after photos of the finished work.
Signs You Need a New Chimney Cap
- No cap at all on top of the chimney
- Rust stains on the crown, brick or siding below the chase
- Bent, torn or missing mesh
- A cap that moved or tilted after a storm
- Birds, squirrels or scratching sounds in the chimney
- Water or rust in the firebox after rain
Chimney Crown Repair
The cap sits on the crown, the concrete slab at the top of a brick chimney. If the crown is cracked, a new cap will not stop water from getting into the masonry. We check the crown on every cap job. If it needs work, we explain our chimney crown repair options and price them separately.
Caps, Animals and Leaks
A cap is also the last step after animal removal. Once we clear a nest, a capped flue keeps the next animal out. Learn more on our chimney animal removal page. If water is still getting in after a cap goes on, the source may be the flashing or the brick. See chimney leak repair and our full list of chimney repair services.
