What Our Dallas Chimney Sweep Includes
Every visit follows the same steps, whether you have a 1960s brick fireplace in Lake Highlands or a factory-built gas unit in a newer North Dallas home.
- Protect the room. Drop cloths from the door to the hearth, the fireplace opening sealed, a HEPA vacuum running.
- Brush the whole system. Rotary brushes sized to your flue clean the firebox, damper, smoke shelf, smoke chamber and flue walls up to the cap.
- Check it with a camera. We run a camera up the flue to look for cracked tiles, gaps and blockages you cannot see from the hearth.
- Look from the roof. We check the chimney cap, crown, flashing and brick for the damage Dallas storms cause.
- Show you the photos. You get before and after pictures and a short list of anything that needs attention, with prices. No pressure.

Signs Your Chimney Needs a Sweep
You do not have to guess. Call for a chimney sweep if you notice any of these:
- A strong campfire or tar smell from the fireplace, worse on hot or humid days
- Smoke that rolls into the room instead of going up the flue
- Black flakes or crumbs falling into the firebox
- A fire that is hard to start or keep burning
- Birds, scratching or chirping sounds in the chimney
- More than a year since the last sweep and inspection
Chimney Cleaning vs. Chimney Sweep
People use both words for the same job. On our site, chimney sweep is the standard yearly visit described above. Chimney cleaning covers the deeper work: chimneys with years of buildup, glazed third-degree creosote, or flues that need special tools. If your fireplace has not been used or cleaned in a long time, tell us when you book so we bring the right equipment.
Chimney Flue Cleaning for Wood and Gas Fireplaces
The flue is the channel that carries smoke out of the house. In older Dallas homes it is usually clay tile. In newer homes it is often a metal pipe inside a wood-framed chase. Each one needs a different brush. Wire brushes on clay, poly brushes on stainless steel. Using the wrong one can scratch a metal liner and shorten its life.
Wood fires leave creosote, a black, tar-like deposit that burns hot if it catches fire. Gas fireplaces leave much less, but their flues still get blocked by nests and debris, and the logs and burners collect soot. We sweep both.
Smoke Chamber Cleaning
Right above the damper is the smoke chamber, a slanted space that funnels smoke into the flue. It is where the thickest creosote collects, and a quick sweep from the top of the chimney often misses it. Our sweep includes the smoke chamber. If the walls are rough or cracked, we explain smoke chamber cleaning and parging, which smooths the surface so creosote cannot build up as fast.
Chimney Inspection With Every Sweep
The Chimney Safety Institute of America and the national fire code, NFPA 211, both recommend an inspection every year. Our sweep includes a Level 1 inspection. That covers the parts you can reach: the firebox, damper, flue, cap and crown.
If we see signs of hidden damage, or you are buying or selling a home, we recommend a Level 2 chimney inspection with a full video scan of the flue. Learn more on our chimney inspection page.
Why Dallas Chimneys Need Regular Sweeping
Dallas fireplaces do not get daily use, but that does not make them safe to skip. Here is what we see most often:
- Long gaps between sweeps. A fireplace used only on cold nights can still build up creosote over several seasons.
- Summer odors. Heat and humidity pull smells out of creosote and push air down the chimney.
- Animal nests. Squirrels, raccoons and birds move into uncapped chimneys during the warm months.
- Storm damage. Spring hail and wind crack crowns and knock caps loose, which lets water in. A chimney cap stops both rain and animals.
