Fireplace Installation Services in Dallas
A new fireplace is more than a box in the wall. It has to fit the space, vent the right way, and sit the right distance from anything that can burn. Each fireplace comes with a listing from its maker that spells out clearances, venting parts and floor protection. We follow it to the letter, along with local code.
We install fireplaces in older brick homes in the M Streets and Lakewood, in newer homes in North Dallas and Plano, and in remodels across the city. Before we quote, we look at the room, the roof or outside wall, and where venting and gas can run.
Types of Fireplaces We Install
| Type | Fuel | Venting | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood-burning fireplace | Wood | Masonry or listed metal chimney | Homes that want a real wood fire |
| Gas fireplace insert | Gas | Liner up the existing chimney | Old wood fireplaces you rarely use |
| Wood-burning insert | Wood | Stainless liner up the chimney | More heat from an old fireplace |
| Direct-vent gas fireplace | Gas | Through the wall or roof | Rooms with no chimney |
| Factory-built fireplace | Wood or gas | Listed metal chimney in a chase | New builds and additions |
Gas or wood? Gas wins on ease: no wood to haul, no ashes, and a fire with a switch or a remote. Wood wins on the feel of a real fire and on heat when the power is out. Many Dallas families pick gas for the living room and keep a wood stove or wood fireplace for the patio or den.
Gas Fireplace Installation
Gas fireplaces are the most common choice in Dallas. Direct-vent units pull outside air in and push exhaust out through a sealed pipe, so they do not use room air. That makes them a good fit for tight, newer homes.
We set the unit, run and seal the vent, and test the pilot, burner and controls once gas is on. A licensed plumber runs the gas line and makes the gas connection. We do not do gas line plumbing.
Fireplace Insert Installation
An insert turns an old, drafty fireplace into a sealed unit that puts heat into the room. It slides into the existing firebox and vents through a new liner run up the chimney. Before an insert goes in, we sweep the chimney and check the firebox and flue, because an insert needs a sound chimney around its liner. See chimney relining for how liners work.
Wood-Burning Fireplace and Stove Options
If you want real wood heat, a wood insert or a freestanding stove often burns cleaner and heats better than an open fireplace. Our wood stove installation page covers stoves, pellet stoves, hearth pads and clearances.
Factory-Built Fireplaces in North Dallas Homes
Many homes built from the 1980s on in North Dallas, Plano and Richardson have factory-built fireplaces. These are metal fireboxes with a metal chimney inside a wood-framed chase on the outside wall. Each one is tested and listed as a system, so the firebox, chimney pipe and cap must be parts made to go together.
When one of these units burns out, we replace it with a listed unit and the matching venting. We also check the chase and the chase cover on the roof, because Dallas hail and rain often rust the top of the chase and let water run down to the firebox.
Gas Log Installation
If your fireplace is in good shape and you just want an easy fire, gas logs may be all you need. They cost less than a new unit and sit right in the existing firebox. Read about vented and vent-free sets on our gas log installation page.
How a Fireplace Installation Works
- Site visit. We measure the space, check the chimney or wall, and talk through fuel, look and budget.
- Free written estimate. You get the unit, the venting, the labor and any permit costs in writing.
- Plumber and permits. If a gas line is needed, we coordinate with a licensed plumber. We check what your city requires.
- Install. We set the unit, run and seal the venting, and keep the clearances from the listing.
- Test and walk-through. We light it, check draft and controls, and show you how to run it safely.
Signs It Is Time for a New Fireplace
- The firebox in a factory-built fireplace is cracked or burned through
- Parts for your old gas unit are no longer made
- The fireplace pulls heat out of the room instead of adding it
- You never use your wood fireplace because of the smoke and mess
- You are remodeling and want the fireplace to match
Code, Clearances and Safety
Fireplaces must be installed with the right clearances to wood framing, the right hearth extension and a chimney tall enough to draft. These rules come from the maker’s listing and from NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys, fireplaces and vents. After the job, a fireplace inspection each year keeps it safe.
