Fireplace Cleaning for Dallas Homes
Most people think of the chimney when they think of a sweep. But the part you see every day is the fireplace: the firebox, the grate, the glass doors and, in a gas unit, the logs and burner. That is where ash, soot and dust pile up, and where smells start.
We clean wood-burning fireplaces in 1950s brick homes in Lakewood and gas fireplaces in newer homes in Preston Hollow and Plano. Both need regular care, just in different ways. A wood fireplace needs ash and creosote removed. A gas fireplace needs its logs, burner and glass kept clean so the flame burns the way it was designed to.
Stove & Fireplace Cleaning
Our stove and fireplace cleaning covers every part of the hearth that holds fire. For a wood fireplace, that means ashes out, the grate and andirons brushed, firebrick vacuumed, and the damper and smoke shelf cleaned. For a stove, it means the firebox, baffle and stovepipe.
If you have a wood stove or pellet stove, read our wood stove cleaning page. It explains what we clean inside the stove and how often it needs it.
Fireplace Cleaning and the Chimney Sweep
The fireplace and the chimney work as one system. A clean firebox under a dirty flue is still a fire risk, because creosote in the flue is what burns in a chimney fire. That is why our chimney sweep includes the firebox and smoke shelf, plus a Level 1 inspection and a camera check of the flue.
The Chimney Safety Institute of America and NFPA 211 both recommend a yearly inspection. Book your fireplace cleaning at the same visit and the whole system gets done at once.
What We Clean
| Part | Wood fireplace | Gas fireplace |
|---|---|---|
| Firebox and firebrick | Ashes and soot vacuumed | Dust and debris vacuumed |
| Grate and andirons | Brushed | Not used |
| Damper and smoke shelf | Cleaned | Checked |
| Glass doors | Cleaned, gasket checked | Cleaned, haze removed when possible |
| Gas logs and burner | Not used | Logs brushed, burner ports cleared |
| Pilot area | Not used | Cleaned and checked |
| Flue | Swept with the chimney sweep | Checked for nests and blockages |
Firebox and Grate Cleaning
The firebox is the brick or panel box where the fire burns. Ash holds moisture, and wet ash can rust the grate and the damper above it. We remove the ash, brush the grate, and vacuum the firebrick so we can see any cracks. If a brick is broken or a panel is cracked, we photograph it and give you a price for firebox repair.
Glass Door Cleaning
Glass doors get a gray or white film from smoke and from minerals in gas. We clean the glass with a product made for fireplace glass, then check the door gasket and the frame. A worn gasket lets room air leak up the chimney. Glass that stays cloudy after cleaning is often etched, and we can tell you if a new panel is the fix.
Gas Log Cleaning
Gas logs are ceramic and can crack if handled roughly. We take them out in order, brush off the soot, clear the burner ports and put them back in the pattern the maker shows. Logs placed wrong are a common reason for soot on the glass. If the logs are crumbling or the flame looks lazy and yellow, see our gas fireplace repair page.
How Often to Clean a Fireplace in Dallas
Most Dallas fireplaces burn on cool nights from November to February and sit unused the rest of the year. That pattern still leaves ash, soot and creosote behind. Use this as a guide:
| How you use it | Fireplace cleaning | Chimney sweep and inspection |
|---|---|---|
| Gas fireplace | Logs, burner and glass once a year | Inspect once a year |
| Wood fires a few times a year | Ashes out after each cool spell | Inspect yearly, sweep at 1/8 inch of buildup |
| Wood fires most winter weekends | Ashes out weekly, deep clean yearly | Sweep and inspect every year |
Plan the visit for late summer or early fall. Calendars fill up fast once the first cold front comes through North Texas.
Safe Ash Removal Between Visits
Ashes can hold live coals for days. Wait until the fireplace is fully cold, then scoop the ashes into a metal can with a tight lid. Set the can outside, away from the house, the fence and the deck. Never put ashes in a paper bag, a plastic bin or the trash cart.
Signs Your Fireplace Needs Cleaning
- A campfire or tar smell, worse on hot, humid days
- Ash piled above the bottom of the grate
- Glass doors you cannot see through
- Soot on the logs, the firebox walls or the face of the fireplace
- Smoke that comes into the room when you light a fire
- Spiders, leaves or nest bits in the firebox
