Wood Stove Installation Services in Dallas

A wood stove puts far more heat into a room than an open fireplace, which sends most of its heat up the chimney. After the winter storm in February 2021 left much of North Texas without power, more Dallas families started asking about wood stoves as backup heat.

We install freestanding wood stoves, wood-burning inserts and pellet stoves. That covers older brick homes in Lakewood and Lake Highlands with existing chimneys, and homes with no chimney at all, where we run a listed metal chimney through the roof or wall.

Types of Stoves We Install

Type Fuel Venting Needs power?
Freestanding wood stove Split firewood Stovepipe to a liner or listed chimney No
Wood-burning insert Split firewood Stainless liner up the existing chimney Fan only (optional)
Pellet stove Wood pellets Pellet vent pipe through wall or chimney Yes
Pellet insert Wood pellets Liner up the existing chimney Yes

Pellet Stove Installation

Pellet stoves burn small pellets made from compressed sawdust. They light with a button, feed themselves from a hopper and hold a set temperature. They make very little ash and smoke.

They do need electricity, and most vent through a small pellet vent pipe through an outside wall or up an existing chimney. We set the stove, install the vent with the right rise and termination, and test the feed and fans.

Freestanding Stove or Insert?

A freestanding stove sits on a hearth pad in the room and radiates heat in every direction. It can go almost anywhere you can run a chimney. An insert fits inside an existing masonry fireplace, so it saves floor space and puts the old fireplace back to work. Inserts work well in older brick homes in the M Streets and Lakewood, where the fireplace is the center of the room. Freestanding stoves suit dens, additions and homes with no fireplace at all.

Wood Stove Liners, Venting and Clearances

The venting is the engine of a wood stove. If it is too big, too small or too short, the stove smokes, burns poorly and builds up creosote fast.

When a stove vents into a masonry chimney, we install a stainless steel liner sized to the stove’s outlet. Old clay flues in Dallas homes are often too large for a stove and cool the smoke too quickly. Learn more on our chimney relining page. Where there is no chimney, we install a listed, insulated metal chimney and follow the 3-2-10 rule at the roof.

Clearances and Hearth Pads

Every listed stove has a label that spells out how far it must sit from walls and furniture, and how big the floor protection must be. We follow that label exactly. For unlisted stoves, NFPA 211 calls for 36 inches to anything that can burn.

The hearth pad protects the floor from heat and falling embers. It has to extend past the stove door by the distance the listing gives. Wall shields can cut the clearance on some stoves, but only as the maker allows.

EPA-Certified Wood Stoves

New wood stoves sold in the U.S. must meet EPA smoke limits. A certified stove burns cleaner, uses less wood and leaves less creosote in the flue, which means fewer sweeps and lower fire risk. The EPA Burn Wise program also advises using a trained installer, because installation errors may not be visible until they cause a fire. If you are replacing an old pre-certification stove, a new certified model is a real upgrade.

How a Wood Stove Installation Works

  1. Site visit. We look at the room, the chimney or roof line, and where the stove will sit.
  2. Free written estimate. You get the stove or your own unit, the liner or chimney, the hearth pad and labor in writing.
  3. Chimney prep. For an existing chimney, we sweep and inspect it first and fix any damage.
  4. Install. We set the stove, run the liner or chimney, add a chimney cap and keep the listed clearances.
  5. Test burn. We check the draft, the door seal and the smoke path, then show you how to run it.

Signs Your Stove Setup Needs Work

  • Smoke comes into the room when you open the door
  • The stove is hard to light or will not stay hot
  • Black glass that will not burn clean
  • Rust or gaps in the stovepipe
  • The stove sits closer to the wall than its label allows
  • You are not sure the old stove was ever installed by a pro

Fireplace Installation

If you would rather have the look of a fireplace with a door you can see through, a wood or gas insert can go into your existing fireplace. See our fireplace installation page for inserts, gas units and factory-built fireplaces.

Questions

Wood Stove Installation FAQs

What is the 3-2-10 rule for wood stoves?

The chimney or stovepipe must extend at least 3 feet above where it passes through the roof, and at least 2 feet higher than anything within 10 feet of it. This helps the stove draft and keeps sparks off the roof.

How far does a wood stove need to be from the wall?

A listed stove follows the clearances printed on its label, and many need less space with a wall shield. For an unlisted stove, NFPA 211 calls for 36 inches to anything that can burn. We measure and mark clearances before the stove goes in.

Can you install a wood-burning stove yourself?

We do not recommend it. Clearance, floor protection and venting errors are hard to see and can lead to a house fire, which is why the EPA advises using a trained installer. Many cities also need a permit.

Does a wood stove need a chimney liner?

Yes, when it vents into a masonry chimney. Most old clay flues are too big for a stove and do not draft well with it. A stainless liner sized to the stove outlet gives a strong draft and is much easier to clean.

How much does wood stove installation cost in Dallas?

It depends on the stove, the liner or chimney pipe, the hearth pad and any framing or roof work. We give you a free written estimate after we see the room and the chimney.

What is an EPA-certified wood stove?

It is a stove tested to meet EPA smoke limits. Certified stoves carry a permanent label on the back or side. They burn cleaner, use less wood for the same heat and leave less creosote in the flue.

Should I choose a wood stove or a pellet stove?

A wood stove works without power and burns split firewood. A pellet stove feeds itself from a hopper and runs on a thermostat, but it needs electricity to run its fans and auger. If you want backup heat for power outages, a wood stove is the safer bet.

Do you install stoves outside Dallas?

Yes. We serve Dallas plus Highland Park, University Park, Richardson, Garland, Mesquite, Plano, Addison, Carrollton, Rockwall, The Colony and Sunnyvale.

The technician was knowledgeable, thorough, and left the area clean when the job was finished. It’s hard to find honest and reliable service these days, and they definitely exceeded expectations.
