Wood Stove Cleaning Services in Dallas

A wood stove burns hotter and longer than an open fireplace. That is why people love them, and it is also why they need regular cleaning. Smoke cools as it moves up the stovepipe, and what it leaves behind is creosote, a black, tar-like deposit that can catch fire.

We clean freestanding wood stoves, wood-burning inserts and pellet stoves across Dallas, from older homes in Lake Highlands and Kessler Park to newer houses in Plano and Rockwall.

Stove & Fireplace Cleaning

Wood stove cleaning is part of our stove and fireplace cleaning service. A stove has more parts to clean than an open fireplace, and they need to come out in the right order and go back the same way.

If you also have an open fireplace in the house, we can clean both in one visit. See our fireplace cleaning page for what that covers.

What We Clean on a Wood Stove

  1. Protect the room. Drop cloths from the door to the stove and a HEPA vacuum running the whole time.
  2. Firebox and ash. We remove ash and vacuum the firebrick, then check for cracked bricks.
  3. Baffle. We take out the baffle or secondary burn tubes, clean off the ash and creosote, and check for warping.
  4. Stovepipe. We brush the connector pipe and check each joint, screw and seam.
  5. Flue and liner. We sweep the chimney or liner from the stove to the cap.
  6. Gaskets and glass. We check the door and glass gaskets and clean the glass.
  7. Photo report. You get before and after photos and a list of anything that needs repair.

Stovepipe and Flue Cleaning

The stovepipe connects the stove to the chimney. It is the coolest part of the system, so creosote often builds up there first. We brush it with a brush sized to the pipe, then sweep the flue above it.

Most stoves that vent into a masonry chimney use a stainless steel liner. We use poly brushes on stainless so the liner does not get scratched. If your stove vents into a bare clay flue, or the liner is damaged, see chimney relining.

Door Gaskets and Glass

The rope gasket around the door and glass keeps the stove airtight, so you control the fire with the air knob. A worn gasket lets in extra air, and the stove burns too hot and too fast. We check every gasket and tell you if one needs replacing.

Creosote in Wood Stoves

Creosote forms in three stages. The table shows what to look for:

Stage What it looks like What it means
First degree Dry, black, flaky soot Normal buildup, brushes off easily
Second degree Crunchy, shiny flakes Fire burning too cool, sweep soon
Third degree Hard, shiny glaze like tar Highest fire risk, needs special removal

Wet wood and fires turned down too low make creosote build up faster. The EPA Burn Wise program says firewood should be seasoned for at least six months and burned at a moisture content under 20 percent. A cheap moisture meter tells you in seconds. Read more on our chimney fire prevention page.

How Often to Clean a Wood Stove

How you use it How often to clean
A few fires a year Inspect yearly, sweep when there is 1/8 inch of buildup
Weekends all winter Once a year, before the cool season
Daily heat in winter At least once a season, check the stovepipe monthly

Dallas winters are short, but cold snaps and long storm outages can mean days of steady burning. Check the stovepipe after any long run of daily fires.

Pellet Stove Cleaning

Pellet stoves need a different routine. They make little creosote, but fine fly ash fills the burn pot, the heat exchanger tubes and the vent pipe. Empty the ash pan and scrape the burn pot as the maker’s manual says, often every few bags of pellets. Once a year, we clean the vent, the exhaust blower and the heat exchanger, and check the door gasket. A pellet stove with a dirty vent can shut itself down or push smoke into the room.

Signs Your Wood Stove Needs Cleaning

  • More than 1/8 inch of buildup in the stovepipe or on the baffle
  • Smoke comes into the room when you open the door
  • The fire is hard to start or will not burn hot
  • Glass turns black quickly
  • A strong smoky smell, even when the stove is cold
  • More than a year since the last cleaning and inspection

Wood Stove Installation

If your stove is old, cracked or was never installed with a liner, cleaning will only help so much. Our wood stove installation page covers new wood and pellet stoves, liners, clearances and hearth pads.

Questions

Wood Stove Cleaning FAQs

How often should a wood stove be cleaned?

Have the stove and chimney inspected once a year, as NFPA 211 recommends. Sweep when there is about 1/8 inch of creosote in the stovepipe or flue. If you burn every day in winter, plan on at least one sweep a season.

How do I know my wood stove needs cleaning?

Look inside the stovepipe or at the top of the baffle with a flashlight. If you see more than 1/8 inch of black, flaky or shiny buildup, it is time. Smoke on startup, a weak draft and black glass are other signs.

What is the baffle in a wood stove?

The baffle is a plate near the top of the firebox that holds the gases in the fire longer so they burn more fully. Ash and creosote collect on top of it, and a blocked baffle cuts the draft.

Can I clean my wood stove myself?

You can scoop ashes and wipe the glass when the stove is cold. Brushing the stovepipe and flue, removing the baffle and checking the liner and cap are better left to a chimney sweep, who has the brushes and the HEPA vacuum to keep soot out of the room.

How do I check the door gasket?

Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily, the gasket is worn and the stove is pulling in extra air. That makes it burn too fast and harder to control.

Do pellet stoves need cleaning?

Yes. Pellet stoves make less creosote, but fly ash builds up in the burn pot, heat exchanger and vent pipe. Most makers call for regular cleaning during the season and a full cleaning once a year.

Why does my wood stove glass turn black?

Black glass usually means the fire is burning too cool, often from wet wood or the air turned down too low. Burn dry wood and give the fire more air when you first light it.

Do you clean wood stoves outside Dallas?

Yes. We serve Dallas plus Highland Park, University Park, Richardson, Garland, Mesquite, Plano, Addison, Carrollton, Rockwall, The Colony and Sunnyvale.

We had a great experience with this chimney service from start to finish. They were professional, on time, and explained everything clearly before beginning the work. The technician was knowledgeable, thorough, and left the area clean when the job was finished. It’s hard to find honest and reliable service these days, and they definitely exceeded expectations. Highly recommend for anyone needing chimney inspection, cleaning, or repairs.
